Managing Big Feelings: An Introduction to Emotion Regulation
Starts: August 22, 2019 Ends: August 22, 2019
This presentation will assist parents, teachers and other supportive adults in gaining a deeper understanding of the emotional world of a child, in order to assist with emotion regulation and coping.
Highlights of the presentation include the following:
• We will define emotion regulation and why it matters
• A focus on the developing brain will be offered in terms of understanding why emotion dysregulation may peak during different phases of development
• We will also discuss neuroplasticity of the brain and how our responses can actually influence positive brain development in children
• Michelle will discuss the impact of environment, temperament and family influences
• And most importantly, we will answer the question “what can I do when my child loses their cool?”
• Michelle will introduce a specific approach for responding to emotional distress, which includes detailed information about how to talk to our children
• We will identify pitfalls of adult strategies, including both “pushing” and “protecting”, and how to manage our own reactions in high distress situations

Case scenarios and examples will be discussed throughout the presentation, and participants will have opportunity to ask questions during and after the presentation
